A MOUNTAIN TRIBE

APPEARANCE

Physique

Selder are mountain beastkin with slim, long-limbed bodies covered in short and straight fur. Their ears are enormous and expressive and their facial features give them a rodent-like appearance. Atop their heads, adults grow tall horns.

Sevrants

SEVARRAN BRANDING

Sevrants are the result of sevrran branding, which is practiced only by the Werisian Clan. They are pacts sealed upon a selder's body: "They are inscribed through carving and rune-etching, and through the burning of substances into the flesh. The selder who receive them do not suffer from the branding. Not once the strain has passed, and the pain has ebbed. Unless, of course, the branding is interrupted.”   [B1.C18]

While many sevrants are bonds between selder and mountain, others may be pacts formed with other selders, mountain beasts, or ethereal forces, each carrying its own obligations and consequences. "They may be of gratitude, when a selder has aided. Or debt, when the beast demands return.” [B1.C18]

They are permanent once fully kindled, enduring even as the body ages, though incomplete or interrupted sevrants may fade, leaving the recipient vulnerable or broken. They may grant specific abilities, from heightened senses that detect the subtlest shifts in snow and stone, to ephemeral powers like the Phantom Flame, a fire that warms the selder’s body while feeding on their essence. Repayment is given in many forms. The breach of a pact, improper branding or the rejection of unworthy individuals can result in serious harm, including physical collapse or spiritual fragmentation.

APPEARANCE

To Yu, who had never seen sevrants before, those of Samsira's guide looked like witch runes:

"Between the strands, from his shoulder blades down to his hip, ran a pattern. It was neither of natural colouring, nor paint. Not healing like wounds but also not raised like scars. Not quite a tattoo. Something between all those things; a network of deliberate markings coiled just beneath the skin. The shapes were geometric: circles nested within circles, lines with sharp angles cutting across symmetrical curves. The fur had not been cut or torn out, but because it was white, just like the skin beneath, the lines shone clearly through. They were distinguished by different colours. Grays, pale oranges and muted blues marked what looked like separate symbols seeping upward from the inside. They were etched close, with individual lines of one symbol often running into the empty spaces around the other shapes, though never crossing."   [B1.C18]

Mountain Blood [Werisian Pathfinder Clan]

In [B1.C18], the shaman of the Albweiss Mountain Guild reveals the origin of the Pathfinder Clan:

“In the language of the mountain, they are called the Werisian. It is an ancient clan, the purest among them. Direct descendants of those who came from the Albweiss peaks. Their bloodline has not thinned. They still carry mountain blood in their veins.”

This clan carries sevrants, gained through sevarran branding.

Werisian Sevrants as Pacts with the Mountain

"'When born, Pathfinder selder gain their first sevrant. The Almara. [...] It is the first of them, for some the only one. A mountain-binding. A ritual sealed in the Albweiss caves, to mark them as heirs to their ancestor’s passages. [...] The Almara allows them to be seen by the spirits and beasts of the mountain. To remain untouched, even by the most ravenous. But it is also an obligation to the mountain itself. Those who carry it must devote their lives to the mountain’s will, to ensure they do not lose their way, nor lead others astray. Pathfinders guide. Not merely across stone and ice, as the ignorant believe. [...] The true duty runs deeper. They guide not for the people, but for the mountain. To see that those who do not belong will not remain. To see that those who pass will not despoil.”   [B1.C18]

Pacts with the mountain are formal bindings inscribed as sevrants on a selder’s body, linking them to the peaks and the beings that live on or within the mountain. They may arise from acts of aid, creating obligations of gratitude, or as repayment of debts when the mountain or its inhabitants grant strength or gifts.

All pacts are governed by consequence, and any refusal or failure to fulfill obligations may result in the mountain exacting its claim: “It will take it all, the moment they attempt to depart. Those who live on borrowed life are mountain-bound.” [B1.C18]

Albweiss Guides

People desperately seek to hire their kind as guides for the Snowtrail.

Relations to the Albweiss Mountain Guild

Selder guides are well known amongst the Albweiss Mountain Guild guards. There are special arrangements between the Pathfinder Tribe and the guards on how an injured selder should be treated, if brought into the guild. [B1.C18]

INDIVIDUAL SELDER

A glossary of characters that have been mentioned or appeared.

Unnamed [Companion to Samasira]

Age: Unknown.
Affiliation: Samasira.
First appearance: [B1.C17] Brought to the Albweiss Mountain Guild by Samasira and companions.

APPEARANCE

When the young selder is brought into the Albweiss Mountain Guild, Yu finds him unconscious:

"While short, the selder had the lean proportions of a climber: long and wiry limbs wrapped in layers of oilcloth and knotted wool. His body sagged, twisted from being carried too long; tail crimped awkwardly under one leg, one arm pinned tight against his chest. His pale fur clung to him in matted tangles, rubbed thin in some places. Patches of it had come away, others were streaked with mud and blood."   [B1.C18]

Bubs is shown surprised about how many sevrants he bears on his back.

EQUIPMENT

He carries many yet unknown things:

"A harness and several small packs clung to him, secured in tightly woven loops across his chest and shoulders. Though it was a lot, everything seemed organised. Tools and tokens hung from his belt, amongst them a hollow-bone needle, a shard of mica wrapped in tarnished wire, and a flint-hafted blade barely the length of a claw. There were tiny pouches, wax-sealed scroll tubes, and one fabric bundle stitched from something like kelp."   [B1.C18]

PACTS

This selder carries many sevrants. Information on these pacts will follow.

PAST AND PRESENT

In [B1.C18], Kel-Khadar revealed that the selder came to the Albweiss Mountain Guild to seek out the guild captain.

As of now, he is still out on patrol. Or so the guards claim.
