I — THE TRAVELLERS
THE WORLD DIMMED.
YVES WENT LOOKING FOR ANOTHER DIMENSION.
As a child, Yves survived a devastating encounter with an elf that corrupted his sight. The academy’s healers saved his eyes, but they could not halt the decline of either his ordinary vision or the Second Sight upon which all wizardry depends.
Conventional wizardry offered no cure for his advancing blindness. Yves left the academy before graduating and became an artefact hunter, venturing into places foreign, lost, and forbidden; seeking answers from healers, shamans, and oracles. When desperation finally outweighed good judgement, he struck an unbreakable bargain with a Witch Mother — and has obeyed her demands ever since.
Book One opens amid the desolation of the Northlandic Desert, where a field of monoliths spirals towards the Black Dune, its sands melted into glass. At its heart stands the Pillar, an ancient construct that turned an entire land into desert. To fulfil yet another challenge set by the Witch Mother, Yves and his familiar bring an ethereal mirror to the Pillar, intending to cross into another dimension.
II — THE PASSAGE
FOLLOW THEIR JOURNEY, FOR JUST TWO MINUTES.
It might become a life-long shared venture.
ON THE DESOLATE PLAINS, wanderers were an uncommon sight. Few set foot into the desert, and fewer still pressed on toward the ruins and lighthouses that lay broken along the coastline. They were dead sentinels, scattered corpses stripped of meaning and memory, dismantled to their bones with no one left to mourn them. Whatever histories these lands had once sheltered had long been taken from them. There was no life, other than the wild beasts that had reclaimed what remained. You came here to die, or to disappear from the world. Or you came at a Witch Mother’s command, like Yves.
The world was scorching heat and heavy sandstorms. The sand was everywhere; in his boots, his clothes, his hair, his teeth, and in the cracks of his thoughts. Yves hated every waking moment of it, and since he had not slept for three days, there was plenty of hating to go around.
In his hand lay a glass-etched Adhar leyliner, its narrow rings inscribed with sigils meant to answer to the deep currents of the world’s stray energies. He stood with his back to the boiling white disc that was the midday sun, so that his own shadow fell over the artefact as he tried to read it. Under ordinary conditions, the faint inner glow should have aligned itself toward the nearest leytrace. Here, the light faltered. The further Yves had advanced from the heart of the desert toward the northern coast, the less reliable the instrument had become. Its readings wavered, forming not distinct lines but hesitant curls. They spun, froze, flickered, reoriented, then twisted and reformed again, as though caught between contradictory directions of pull.
Magic, metal, and mind; out here, everything lost integrity. Steel and wood degraded, delicate mechanisms seized, and enchantments thinned. Even the most refined artefacts survived mere months at best; lesser ones came undone within weeks or days.
drew from everything — crafted or living.

III — THE VOICE
WHO IS SPEAKING TO YOU, AND HOW?
The narration dwells inside the mind of the characters as much as it presents the world they inhabit. It favors a deliberate, atmospheric pace over rapid plot progression, while leaning into abstract stylistic choices that emphasise the the general introspective focus.

IV — DISTORTED PAGES
SOMETIMES THE WORDS REFUSE TO STAY ONLY WORDS.
Magic distorts the page.
Thoughts lose their order. Words overlap, vanish or fall apart.
This story incorporates sections with abstract layout and distorted typography, for example to visualise magical phenomena or to heighten the introspective atmosphere.
V — LOOK CLOSER
SOME THINGS ENTER THE STORY BEFORE THEY CAN BE EXPLAINED.
You will find an illustrated world and glossary; places explored, people encountered, and moments that resist prose.
V — LISTEN
FROM TIME TO TIME, THIS STORY SINGS TO YOU
A few chapters feature songs. Some are heard by the characters. Some belong to them. Others cling to the people and places left between the lines, or carry histories that never quite fit inside the chapter.
A SONG FROM BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN
A Heritage of Flame and Steel is a dwarven heritage song heard within the abandoned hold atop the Varren. It introduces Book Two, which can be read largely independently from Book One.

VI — THE IMPRESSIONS OF FELLOW TRAVELLERS
WHAT READERS FOUND
“A high-fantasy progression tale wrapped in melancholy, rendered through luscious prose, anchored by a deeply introspective protagonist and his big black emotional-support panther-cat. It’s experimental, audacious, and stitched together with an ambition that pushes web fiction beyond the confines of “chapters” and straight into the realm of mixed-media art installation.
Its strengths are undeniable—intricate magic, vivid worldbuilding, beautifully layered prose, and character work capable of making you question why your pets don’t give TED Talks about your mental health.”

“Quiet. Lonely. Reflective. Cautious. Worried. Determined.”
“Yves and Midnight – as aforementioned – are compelling characters, bringing unique perspectives and complimentary abilities to each other, making them a perfect pair while navigating the world. Like the rest of the story, the reader can’t help wanting to know more about them, while sympathizing with what we learn while traveling alongside them.”
“I absolutely love the interactions, the characters, and the plot. The entire thing seems so original, and I like how the author makes the font, the color, the very screen fit into the atmosphere that he creates.”
