COMMON TONGUES

Languages that evolved to be spoken among different peoples and across nations.

TEH (TEHSPIC / THELANG)

CONTINENT.
Teh is an informal, comparatively simple language that is widely spoken on the continent. No-one really knows how that came to be.
Archaic records refer to the language as either Tehspic or Thelang. Nowadays, the abbreviation Teh is commonly accepted and preferred as official name. Both alternatives suggest a rather too silly origin, from times where people were still figuring everything out.

“He, strengr! Wea you from? You spik the lengidj?”  —  “Yehs, I spek the lang!”

“Foreigner, yu want what in me villidj? Speak! Yu cen teh spik?”  —  “Jah, I can teh spik.”

For your convenience, please imagine that this story is written in the equivalent of Teh. Thus, the regular font used for the story serves as the representation of Teh.

THE LANGUAGES OF WIZARDRY

Wizards employ a variety of languages in equally diverse regional, ancient and modern variations to transcribe their knowledge. Wizards of the three different Spectra, in particular, use different languages to impart the secrets of their individual magic. Then there are languages that are exclusively intended for higher wizardry.
Thus, languages both protect and limit access to the extensive knowledge about the wizardry and the world.

In principle, wizard scripts used letters. They form words by combining letters, much like Teh.

BYRMIR

The most arcane language of higher wizardry.
Taught and used predominantly at Emery Thurm.

THE LANGUAGES OF WITCHCRAFT

While wizards use a variety of languages, witches only speak one, which has been preserved in its original form for centuries.

FARAMYR

The original language of witches, as ancient as their craft. It is used for almost all spells, rites and curses. Unaltered and unspoilt since the day it had been bestowed upon the first witches, Faramyr carries inherent, arcane power.

In writing, it relies solely on runes, whereby each such symbol may represent one or more words. When used for witchcraft, their meanings shift depending on how individual runes are combined, how large they are drawn in comparison, and how they lean into each other. Runexery also takes into account when, where and with what substances a rune is drawn, and which energies exist in the respective surroundings.

“In short, you could not simply read them out, like wizards did with their spells. If it all came down to linguistics, it was right there in the name; wizard magic had spells, because they spelled out their words and scripts. Witches had witchcraft, because in their vexed handywork, anything and everything made a difference.”   [B1.C18]
