Nothing sharpens envy quite like hundreds of other novices rubbing it into your face; wielding the exact Worldbender abilities that should have belonged to you.
Over time, most wizards come to terms with their once-thwarted desires and discover the potential inherent in their own limitations. With age comes a deeper appreciation of your own spectrum. Eventually, that appreciation matures into professional pride — genuine or feigned.
Yves had learned competence. His shard constructions were precise. His illusions, elegant. Raw light, however, remained beyond him. It did not help that he carried an entirely reasonable aversion to lightning after an unfortunate incident involving a flooded cave. So, given the choice, both by spectral capability and by history, Yves would fend off lightning with shards every single time rather than wrestle the light itself.
