Yves lowered the half-sphere towards the socket. His hand halted when his gaze fell upon his own reflection. He looked down at the face submerged within the mirror, and from there, up at himself. He was so burnt that his skin had paled. He appeared hollow and broken, with eyes too bright from the crater’s light. Yves blinked.
The reflection answered a fraction too late.
Yves stared.
The lightning eyes stared back at him.
It was everywhere, the lightning. The entire crater burned with it; flaring violence of gold and cutting silver. All of it was in his eyes.
Yves blinked again, more slowly this time. He watched himself with deliberate attention.
Only the slightest hesitation.
He continued staring.
The reflected Yves held his gaze with the same intensity; both challenging and challenged. Then, just before the original Yves blinked once more, the one in the mirror closed his eyes first.
“What?” Yves asked the other,
who asked the same question, at the same time.
Neither of them replied.
Yves pressed his eyes shut and finally lowered the half-sphere into its socket.
